Hemsworth’s most recent entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe didn’t meet expectations, as fans believed Thor: Love and Thunder underutilized Christian Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher, resulting in jarring tonal shifts between comedic scenes involving Thor and darker moments involving Gorr and Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster.

This inconsistency left the film feeling imbalanced. Notwithstanding the divisive nature of his fourth standalone movie, Thor’s journey in the MCU is far from over, and a prospective Thor 5 has recently unveiled some novel particulars.

In the upcoming “Thor: Love and Thunder – The Official Movie Special” publication centered around Titan’s imminent release, scheduled for September 19, 2023, Taika Waititi, the director of Thor: Love and Thunder, delves into Thor’s prospective trajectory within the MCU and the potential directions it might take.

Waititi expresses that Thor’s forthcoming escapade should encompass a narrative that “continues to advance the character’s journey” and provides him with “challenges that build upon the hurdles he must surmount.” Among these challenges within the plot of Thor 5, a formidable villain surpassing Hela would emerge, aligning with Waititi’s belief that this antagonist should be “even more imposing in some way.” Below, you’ll find the full quote:

“What is left to do to him? It’s got to be something that feels like it’s carrying on with the evolution of the character, but still in a very fun way and still giving him things to come up against that feel like they’re building on the obstacles that he has to overcome. I don’t think we can have a villain that’s weaker than Hela. I feel like we need to step up from there and add a villain that’s somehow more formidable”

In Thor 5, Taika Waititi is planning to bring in even wilder villains.

Although Thor 5 hasn’t been officially announced, Waititi seems to have many ideas in progress in case the movie gets the green light. The director also shared that he finds one thing about Thor more authentic compared to other MCU characters – that’s “the ancient stories he comes from.”

Waititi thinks that having Thor face off against “increasingly bizarre and wild creatures, creatures, and extraterrestrial beings” as his journey unfolds within the MCU remains faithful to Thor’s comic book roots and his mythical beginnings.

Keeping in line with both Thor’s origins and Waititi’s own outlandish style for his stories, the director feels that Thor is the MCU franchise that really “lends itself towards big, inventive, colorful creatures and aliens and things from different worlds.”

Waititi thinks the aspect of exploration that comes with Thor is important, as the hero has traveled a wide away of worlds due to “Thor being so old.” This is why Waititi thinks Thor facing wild villains in the MCU and a possible Thor 5 doesn’t affect him, saying, “I don’t think he’s that surprised when he sees these things.”

In Waititi’s view, Thor’s unique qualities add an extra layer of excitement to his intergalactic escapades compared to the human characters in the MCU. Waititi mentioned, “So, there’s a sense of enjoyment in his character, and he carries a relaxed confidence when he explores these realms and meets these extraterrestrial beings, something you wouldn’t quite feel if it were a person from Earth journeying through space to explore the cosmos.”

Drawing from Waititi’s statements, if the director has the opportunity to create Thor 5, fans of the MCU could anticipate Thor embarking on adventures across vibrant and diverse worlds, clashing with untamed adversaries, and confronting an opponent even mightier than Hela. This prospect would undoubtedly make Thor 5 an exceptionally remarkable movie.
